Hey there

It’s one of the questions I get asked most as a maternity photographer, and it’s a good one. Timing a maternity session isn’t something most mamas think about until they’re already well into their second trimester, and by then, the window can feel a little smaller than expected.

The short answer is that I typically recommend scheduling your session around 30 to 32 weeks. But the reasoning behind that matters just as much as the number, so let me walk you through it.

Why 30 to 32 Weeks Is the Sweet Spot

By 30 to 32 weeks, your belly is full, round, and beautifully defined. It photographs in the most stunning way at this stage, unmistakably pregnant, but before the physical discomforts of the final weeks begin to set in. Earlier than this, depending on your body, the bump can sometimes appear less prominent in photos than it feels in real life. And while every stage of pregnancy is worth celebrating, the last few weeks tend to bring fatigue and restlessness that can make a session feel more draining than enjoyable.

This window is also when most mamas still feel relatively like themselves. There’s an energy and a presence at 30 to 32 weeks that comes through beautifully on camera and makes for the most relaxed sessions.

You’ll Still Feel Comfortable and Present

A maternity session should feel like a gift you are giving yourself, a moment to slow down and honor everything your body is doing and everything that is about to change. At 30 to 32 weeks, most mamas still have enough energy to move through different poses, try a few outfit changes, and be fully present during the session. That ease and openness is what creates the most natural, beautiful images.

By 36 or 37 weeks, the anticipation of meeting your baby has a way of taking over everything else, and rightfully so. But it can also mean that by the time the session arrives, you’re simply too close to the finish line to fully settle into the experience.

Book Earlier Than You Think

One of the most common things I hear from mamas is that they wish they had reached out sooner. Photographers book up, schedules shift, and the weeks between 28 and 32 weeks move surprisingly fast. I’d recommend reaching out no later than your second trimester so you have plenty of time to secure a date that works, choose your outfits, and feel fully prepared going into your session.

A Little Story

Early in my career, I had a maternity session scheduled with a client who was 37 weeks along. The morning of her session came and went, no show, no message. A week later, I found out through a colleague that she had gone into labor the day before we were supposed to meet. She was a little bit busy, to say the least! I think about her often when I’m talking with clients about timing. It’s a good reminder that the end of pregnancy has a way of arriving faster than expected.

What if you’re already further along?

If you’re reading this at 34 or 35 weeks, please don’t panic. It’s not too late. Reach out right away and we’ll look at what’s available. Some of my most beautiful sessions have happened a little later than originally planned, and I’m always happy to work with your timeline.

The most important thing isn’t the exact number of weeks. It’s that you pause long enough to honor this season at all. Your body, your growing baby, the quiet anticipation of everything that is about to unfold. This particular version of your family, in this particular moment, will never exist in quite the same way again. These are the days you will want to look back on. And you deserve to have something beautiful to return to.
